Игрок управляет по очереди сразу тремя персонажами — Соником (синий антропоморфный ёж, обладающий способностью бегать на сверхзвуковых скоростях), Тэйлзом (молодой лис с двумя хвостами, которые позволяют ему летать) и Наклзом (красная ехидна, с кулаками с увеличенными костяшками). Каждый персонаж обладает уникальными способностями и переключаться между ними можно в любой момент игры. Уровни игры содержат различные препятствия, в том числе и такие, преодолеть которые нельзя в одиночку, иногда — только благодаря конкретному персонажу. Таким образом, только совместными усилиями Соника, Тэйлза и Наклза можно пройти уровень за уровнем.
